Updated: Nov 24, 2023

What is the Mongolia Golden Eagle?

The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is a large bird of prey found in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the most widespread eagle species and belongs to the Accipitridae family. Golden eagles have dark brown feathers with lighter golden-brown feathers on their napes. Juveniles have white markings on their wings and tails. They are skilled hunters, using their speed, agility, and sharp talons to catch prey like hares, rabbits, and marmots.

Golden eagles establish territories that can be as large as 200 km2 (77 sq mi) and build nests in high places like cliffs. Breeding usually takes place in spring, and they form monogamous pairs that may stay together for many years. Female eagles lay up to four eggs and incubate them for about six weeks. Usually, one or two young survive and fledge in about three months. These juveniles become independent in the fall and establish their own territories in four to five years.

Although they have disappeared from some heavily populated areas, golden eagles are still widely distributed in Eurasia, North America, and parts of North Africa. They are the largest and least common of the five true accipitrid species that breed in both the Palearctic and the Nearctic.

Golden eagles have a long history in falconry and hold great cultural significance in some ancient tribal societies. They have also been extensively studied in certain regions, such as the Western United States and the Western Palearctic, where they are considered one of the most well-studied raptor species.

Who are Mongolian Eagle Hunters?

Mongolian eagle hunters are a distinct group of skilled individuals who practice the traditional art of eagle hunting, also known as falconry, in Mongolia. This ancient tradition has been passed down through generations and holds a deep cultural significance for the Kazakh people, who primarily reside in the western part of Mongolia.

Eagle hunters form a unique bond with their eagles, typically using golden eagles for hunting. These majestic birds are captured at a young age and trained to cooperate with their human partners. The hunters develop a profound understanding of the eagles' behavior and instincts, nurturing a relationship built on trust and mutual respect.

The hunting technique involves releasing the eagle from a high vantage point and signaling it to swoop down on prey such as foxes, hares, or small game. The eagles' exceptional speed, agility, and deadly talons make them formidable hunters in the rugged Mongolian landscape.

Eagle hunters showcase their remarkable skills and cultural heritage during traditional festivals and competitions, such as the Golden Eagle Festival held annually in Bayan-Ölgii province. These events provide a platform for hunters to display their mastery, as they demonstrate their eagles' obedience, accuracy, and speed in capturing targets.

The lifestyle of Mongolian eagle hunters reflects a deep connection with nature and the harsh realities of the Mongolian steppe. It requires immense dedication, patience, and a profound understanding of the natural environment. The hunters navigate vast expanses, enduring extreme weather conditions and long periods of isolation while upholding their ancient traditions.

Mongolian eagle hunters serve as cultural ambassadors, preserving and promoting their unique heritage to the world. Their commitment to sustaining this age-old practice ensures the continuation of a rich tradition that embodies the spirit of resilience, harmony with nature, and the profound bond between humans and animals.

When is the Mongolian Eagle Festival?

The Mongolian Eagle Festival, also known as the Golden Eagle Festival, is typically held annually in October in Bayan-Ölgii province in western Mongolia. However, please note that event schedules can vary from year to year, so it is recommended to check for the most up-to-date information regarding specific dates and locations if you plan to attend.
